Gardening 8 months agoCucumber beetles are doing quick work of turining our cucumber and squash leaves into lace. Any and all suggestions welcome! Possibly helpful background: We till in our own compost/goat manure/waste hay each year, no chemicals, plant with the biodynamic calendar and put seeds in our mouth ala Anastasia.

You can gather some of the beetles, put them in a small amount of water and leave them there for a bit – tincture of beetle. You can dilute the tincture and then spray your crop.
You can take the tincture one step further and turn it into a homeopathic. Take one part of your tincture and 9 parts of water. Shake vigorously (technically…

Not an experienced gardener by any means, but my take on the ants is that they are neither friend nor foe. They just are. Just like everything else is. There’s a reason nature put them there, at this time and place, they have a job to do for the soil and surrounding life. If they aren’t hurting anything, I’d let them be! If they are…

I have the same problem this year and new issue in the garden! Just this morning, I spread diatomaceous earth around outside. Inside my green house, I use the combination of Borax, sugar and water on cotton balls and the ants come drink it. It took care of the aphid problem very well by slowing down the ants.

Ants in the Garden: Friend or Foe?
I know ants provide soil aeration due to their underground tunnels, but are there drawbacks to having an abundance of ants in the garden? My greenhouse beds are full of them and while my plants and sprouts don’t seem to be negatively affected by them, I’m curious about the experience of some of the more seasoned gardeners in this group. Thanks!

I’m intrigued by the building covered in plastic! And is there a tree in between two of the bed edges?

I have thin (1-2′ wide) long disturbed strips of soil next to a sidewalk installed last autumn by the city where I live (central IL). I rolled up the turf they plopped down and threw some very old short-grass prairie seed onto the land, covered it with straw.. what I’d like is to prepare to plant additional things but Im struggling to identify… Read more

Bravo for your reclaiming of a strip of wasteland!
Have you looked into dog-repelling plants, like citronella, curry or plecthransus caninus?
