My neighborhood say they want to spray “bacillus bacteria” on the trees to prevent another caterpillar outbreak– do you know whether these sprays pose a health threat to people, animals, and plants? Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Is it ever too late to start winter pruning my fruit trees?

    • Mike,

‘Winter pruning’ time is different for everyone depending on where you live. Those of us in the colder climates i.e. hard spring frosts and/or snow are wise to wait longer as extreme cold can damage newly pruned canes. For us here at the southern most point of the Pacific Northwest Region, I find that we are usually safe to prune by the…

Hi Deb! New to the community, well at least the new site and have a question. I live in the Piedmont area in North Carolina and developing my little one acre homestead and want to grow JIAO GU LAN here. Do you have any tips you can share on how you prep your soil and care for this plant? Also, have you all ever thought of selling the plants…

      • Hell-o Hal and Shelli,

My delay in responding is due to the torrential rains we’ve experienced here which in turn interrupts our signal from our satellite. Off grid living here on the farm is wonderful, however heavy winter weather does affect us at times.

My husbands and my decision to start growing gynostemma, aka jiao gu lan, was made about…

      Ask Deb

Thanks loads Deb, it’s always exciting when bulbs start sticking their little noses through the soil, winter aconite is my favourite around here.

Iv’e googled and I’m in the equivalent of zone 8b. I’m in the UK so we tend to talk in terms of up north, down south and in the middle as the UK is so tiny!

Yes, I’d love to know what you think would…

Hell-o gardeners. I imagine we’re all feeling a bit impatient to get our hands in the soil. I, personally, was feeling a bit sorry for myself due to the non stop storms and torrential rain and flood warnings. However, after reading what is ahead this next week for 75% of America, with temps as low as 30 degrees below 0, I snapped out of…

          Dear Deb,

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones as well! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my questions. Your suggestions are most helpful. That is a fantastic idea to compost the plants back into the soil! I am going to try this. It makes such sense to do that. I will try your suggestion of azomite and organic worm…

          Ask Deb

          Sonya,

I know how you feel. I’m getting my garden ready now even though we are experiencing extreme rainfall and have been for 2 months. However I noticed yesterday that my daffodils are coming up which means Spring is on the way!

In order to make a recommendation to you for plants that would do well in your garden containers please let me…

          Ask Deb

          Sherry,

Happy New Year and thanks for reaching out. I understand your concern about protecting the integrity of the soil and the beneficial organisms that exist there. One technique I use is the gentle removal of the finished plants and I then bury them back into the bed, This provides compost and keeps a renewing process in the soil. We have…

        • The Itch/Organic Seeds

Hi Deb, it’s only January and it’s very cold but the sun is shining and that springtime itch is already starting so I’ve got my seed catalogues out and am starting to plan!

This will be my 3rd year of growing in a tiny, half shade/half sun garden, pretty much entirely in pots. So was just wondering what zone are you in and what herbs/veg/fruit…
